Families of 157 Indonesian citizens (WNI) victims of Dutch executions during the war have demanded compensation from the Negeri Pinchir government.
The Dutch Ministry of Defense reported that 157 families had filed for compensation since last October 2020.
At that time, the Netherlands began implementing a compensation policy of 5,000 euros or the equivalent of Rp. 82 million.
Since then, the Dutch government has received 157 requests for compensation. But so far, they have only granted 15 requests.
"Many other requests are now in the final stages and will be given soon. Many relatives have asked for information on their requests as well," a spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Defense said, as quoted by NRL.
The party filing for compensation is a relative of an Indonesian citizen who was executed by the Dutch colony during the war.
During the war for independence in 1945-1949, the Dutch military executed around 100,000 Indonesians without trial.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte has apologized for the extreme and systematic violence during that wartime.
So far, the Netherlands actually considered that the execution had exceeded the expiration date of the case so they could not provide compensation.
However, last year a Dutch court ruled against the government's position.
Last week, Rutte then wrote to the House of Representatives that Dutch violence during the Dutch East Indies period would be considered a war crime.
